SHOT Show 2020 – The new Ruger-57 pistol in 5.7x28mm caliber offers user-friendly features in a poorly populated market segment

Standing out among the many new products that Ruger Firearms has in store for 2020, the Ruger-57 semi-automatic pistol definitely stands out for multiple reasons.

There are not many pistols out there that are chambered for the 5.7x28mm caliber, originally developed by FN for the P90 sub-machine gun and its Five-seveN companion handgun; even less if we count out all the design patterned after the AR-15 or other "SMG-style" models. Essentially the Ruger-57 is entering in the competition to win a market with a very small number of players, which as of today is mostly egemonized by the mentioned FN Five-seveN. And it's doing so with a vengeance.

Announced just at the beginning of January, the Ruger-57 is a delayed blowback semi-automatic pistol feeding from a double-stack magazine holding 20 rounds of 5.7x28mm ammunition; 10-rounds magazines are also available for jurisdictions where restrictions apply. The Ruger-57 is built around a glass-filled nylon frame featuring an optimized texture grip, and a through-hardened billet steel slide with lightening cuts which is drilled and tapped for easy mounting of optics through the use of an adapter plate, sold separately.

The 4.94" (12,54 cm) steel barrel features a black nitride treatment for wear resistance, and the fire control housing is precision CNC-machined from anodized aluminum. The pistol is 8.65"/21,97 cm long and weighs 24.5 ounces (approximately 694 grams).

All of the controls of the Ruger-57 – like the 1911-style ambidextrous manual safety, robust slide release and the reversible magazine latch – are easily accessible; despite the longer cartridges, the trigger reach is no longer than many common 9mm Luger handguns.

Rounding out the package is a windage and elevation adjustable, serrated rear sight and rapid acquisition fiber optic front sight for fast, accurate shooting; Picatinny-style accessory rail; and Ruger's Secure Action fire control which combines a reliable and proven internal double-action hammer system with a short, crisp trigger pull and a positive reset.
