The new Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifle is engineered to deliver the accuracy and performance expected from a custom grade rifle, offering features such a premium carbon fiber stock and the option of a steel or carbon fiber barrel with an impressive .75 MOA accuracy guarantee
New for 2020 from Springfield Armory, the Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifles series departs from Springfield's tradition of semi-automatic centerfire modern sporting platforms – such as the M1A and Saint lines – to deliver a fully US-built, precision-manufactured bolt-action platform specifically conceived for the most demanding hunters and precision shooters.
While remaining appropriately priced – the MSRP on the US market ranges between $1,699 and $2,399 depending on the configuration – the Springfield Armory model 2020 Waypoint offers premium features and a wide array of user-selectable options, to meet the increasing international demand for versatile and accurate manual repeating rifles.
The Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifle is built around a carbon fiber stock developed jointly with, and provided by, AG Composites; each stock is hand-layed and pillar bedded for perfect marriage to the action, striking an excellent balance between rock-solid strength and mobility.
The Model 2020 Waypoint rifle is available in two different camo options – Evergreen or Ridgeline camo – and with the user's choice of a Hybrid profile plain buttstock or an optional three-axis adjustable cheek comb.
All the stocks on the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint rifles come issued from factory with a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad and five strategically-placed QD mounts to allow the rifle to be slung in a variety of positions, depending on the user's needs and preferences and intended use.
The bolt of the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint rifle is fluted after heat treatment and features two locking lugs and an optimized extraction cam, as well as a dual locking cam, a removable bolt knob, and a low-profile bolt stop. The 90-degrees bolt throw ensures plenty of clearance.
The receiver features EDM (electrical discharge machined) bolt lug raceways for precision and smooth cycling, as well as an integral recoil lug machined directly to its body, a sliding extractor for reliable operation in the most adverse conditions and a hybrid dual-plane feed ramp for reliable and repeatable performance.
Optics are mounted directly to the receiver through a Remington 700-pattern Picatinny rail, with two recoil pins.
The Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifle is available in three barrel lenghts – 20", 22" and 24" (51, 56 and 61 cm) – and two different barrel options: a fluted, 416 steel barrel and a BSF barrel jacketed in a roll-wrapped carbon fiber sleeve and loaded under tension.
This solution ensures that 95% of the carbon fiber sleeve does not actually enter in contact with the barrel, providing provides cooling air gaps and promoting cold bore to warm bore repeatability; fluting under the sleeve reduces weight and increases the surface cooling area.
All barrels are free-floated, and come with Springfield Armory's own Radial Brake, engineered to effectively reduce recoil by directing gasses in an outward direction.
Standard on the Model 2020 Waypoint rifle is a TriggerTech trigger featuring a low-profile, non-snag safety and employing the Company’s own Frictionless Release technology; it is manually adjustable from 2.5 to 5 pounds (1,13 to 2,26 kg), with a patented, free-floating roller for a crisp, clean and repeatable pull.
The lock time (trigger pull to primer strike time) for the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint rifle has been reported to be just 1.9 milliseconds, up to 45 percent faster than the competition, resulting in less deviation from the point of aim due to movement during the shot.
According to Springfield Armory, this combination of factors allows the Model 2020 Waypoint rifle to offer a .75 MOA accuracy guarantee – for a three-shot group at 100 yards with quality match-grade factory ammunition, in the hands of a skilled shooter.
The Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifle is available in four popular hunting and precision shooting calibers: .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO; 6mm Creedmoor; 6.5 Creedmoor; and 6.5 PRC. All models feed from detachable Accuracy International AICS-compatible magazines, offering a capacity that ranges between 3+1 and 5+1 rounds, depending from the caliber.
Ranging between 41.5" / 105,41 cm and 43.5" / 110,49 cm in length and between approximately 6.93 lbs / 3,14 kg and 8.12 lbs / 3,68 kg in weight – once again, depending on the configuration – the Springfield Armory Model 2020 Waypoint bolt-action rifle aims at becoming a smash hit among hunters and long-range shooters.
With the demand for this type of platform growing and becoming more and more particular with time – not just domestically, but globally! – it's left to see how it will fare with competition from both the US and abroad. Sure thing, it does seem to have what it takes to become a strong seller, setting the bar for Springfield Armory's future endeavours.
