Recently introduced on the global markets, the Steyr Arms AUG A3-SA M2 semi-automatic bull-pup rifle is the civilian version of the improved Steyr AUG A3 M2 5.56x45mm NATO assault rifle, which the Austrian-based specialized publication Spartanat mentioned as being issued to the Jagdkommando (Austrian Army special forces) as early as in October 2023.

The Steyr AUG A3 M2 retains the basic AUG A3's working system, controls configuration, and proprietary magazine, which is available in 9, 30, and 42 rounds variants.

All modifications are focused on improving ergonomics: in both its select-fire and semi-automatic variants, the AUG A3 M2 features a prominent brass deflector bolted on to the stock, right behind the ejection window, and the upper receiver features a flat-top, cantilever design Picatinny rail for optics, a set of two QD sling swivel slots, and a quick-detach machined aluminum handguard with M-LOK slots on seven surfaces for accessories.

The AUG's classic folding vertical front grip is featured on the A3 M2 variants, but can be removed if the shooter prefers a C-Clamp or a more classic shooting stance. Another shorter Picatinny rail segment is located on the rear right portion of the upper receiver, slightly offset, for additional accessories such as WML or lasers.

Additionally, the charging handle of the Steyr AUG A3 M2 in all its variants can be folded up to prevent snagging. The basic variants of the Steyr AUG A3 M2 and A3-SA M2 feature a 417 mm (16.4") barrel with a birdcage-style flash hider and are 710 mm / 27.95" long overall, weighing in at 3,5 kilograms (8.38 lbs) when empty.

The Steyr AUG A3 M2 assault rifle is already available to military, law enforcement, and government customers; the Steyr AUG A3-SA M2 semi-automatic rifles is in distribution in select European markets, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price ranging around 3.000 euros.

The new upper receiver cantilever rail and M-LOK handguard are 100% compatible with pre-existing AUG-M3 stock groups (a.k.a. lower receivers), so that conversion kits for older rifles may become available in the future, but no specific additional information has been made available so far.
