They've been available in the United States for a while, and they quickly earned a cult following among shooters stateside, getting to rival with some of the best known and established products of the American and European gun industry; they also reached the European civilian markets relatively recently, but already managed to conquer a substantial following among shooters and enthusiasts on this side of the Big Pond.

We're talking about the line of semi-automatic, striker-fired, polymer frame pistols manufactured in Turkey by the Samsun Yurt company under the Canik brand; distributed in North America by Century Arms of Delray Beach (Florida), the Canik TP line of striker-fired pistols now have another factor going for them that all competition shooters, gun collectors, law enforcement and private security professionals, and more generally speaking all those looking for an affordable and reliable firearm for personal, home or property defense should look at. And we're not just talking about the very competitive pricing.

The Canik TP9 SFx was indeed named Handgun of the Year 2017 at the 2nd Annual 2017 Industry Choice Awards held at the Rockcastle Shooting Center in Park City (Kentucky, U.S.A.).

A panel of thirty hand-selected and unbiased evaluators – consisting of delegates from the firearms community such as gunsmiths, range owners, retailers, distributors, recreational shooters, law enforcement and military personnel – tested the Canik TP9 SFx for several days along with 97 other entries for consideration in product categories of rifles, handguns, shotguns, optics, accessories and ammunition; the evaluators spent 28 hours of detailed analysis with 23 questions per product starting with visually examining products on a bench and then live-fire function testing. Each submitting company was provided the audited confidential evaluation results of their product.

The Canik TP9 SFx is an entry-level priced, yet high-performance competition-oriented of the TP9 platform, conceived for several practical shooting disciplines as well as for 3-Gun. Chambered in 9mm, it feeds through detachable double-stack metal magazines manufactured in Italy by MEC-GAR, available in 18-rounds and 20-rounds versions with extended baseplates.

The Canik TP9 SFx is built around the same black reinforced, ergonomic polymer frame with a Picatinny accessory rail and a set of interchangeable grip backstraps as the rest of the TP9 series, and features a 2,2 kilograms ( 3-lb., 10-oz.) single-action only trigger, non-ambidextrous extended slide stop and extended magazine release.

The button-rifled 13 cm (5.2") barrel of the Canik TP9 SFx offers six right-handed grooves with a 1:10" twist rate for accuracy. The machined 4140 chrome-moly steel slide features a tungsten grey Cerakote finish over a phosphate layer for increased resistance to wear, scratches, and adverse conditions.

Other features of the slide include front and rear serrations, eight lightening cutouts at the front, a fiber optic Warren Tactical front sight and a rear Warren Tactical sight adjustable for windage.

The slide is also optics-ready: a protected slot allows the use of four different interfaces to mount a plethora of micronized red-dot sights among the most popular between IPSC and USPSA shooters: Docter, Meopta, Insight, Vortex, Trijicon, C-More, Leupold, Shield or J-Point. A threaded hole on the optic mounting plate also allows the installation of an optional ambidextrous cocking handle designed for use in competition.

The Canik TP9 SFx is a true out-of-the-box competition-ready design offering impressive features and performance, and at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $549.99 in the United States and approximately €700 in Europe, it is a hard one to beat – particularly considering how with a small surcharge, both in the U.S. and in Europe, it can be obtained already equipped with a Vortex or Docter sight.
