SHOT Show 2022 - Smith & Wesson introduces the Volunteer line of 5.56x45mm semi-automatic rifles: six new AR-15 variants, upgraded with some of the best, most valued features provided by highly regarded third parties to meet the needs and demands of modern-day shooters!

The Smith & Wesson Volunteer line of 5.56mm AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, officially announced at the 2022 edition of SHOT Show, in Las Vegas, goes on to expand and update Smith & Wesson's own, highly successful M&P-15 series of modern sporting rifles which has been enjoying a significant level of success on the global markets ever since it was first introduced back in 2006.

As of today, the Smith & Wesson Volunteer line is comprised of six models, all in 5.56x45mm, all offering a package of feature that will surely appeal both to sport shooters and to those law enforcement entities that issue semi-automatic centerfire long guns to their officers for patrol duties.

All models feature a direct gas impingment system, and come from factory with a CrMoV 4140 steel barrel with a 5R rifling pattern and a 1:8" twist rate, available in 16" length for most models except for two variants (14.5" and 20" barrel respectively).

Two series of rifles – dubbed the Volunteer XV and Volunteer XV Pro, respectively – are currently part of the M&P-15 Volunteer line. Each sports its own distinctive technical features and specific furniture, to meet the needs of different categories of shooters.

The baseline Volunteer XV rifle, the Volunteer XV Optics Ready and the Volunteer XV Red Dot all come with a BCM Gunfighter M-LOK black polymer handguard, a B5 Systems Bravo buttstock and a B5 Systems Type 23 grip.

All three models feature a machined MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for optics on the upper receiver. The Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV rifle also features an adjustable post A2 front sight and a Williams WGS Tactical rear folding sight; the others come instead with a railed low-profile gas block. The Volunteer XV Red Dot model comes with a factory-issued Crimson Trace CTS-25 red dot sight.

The Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV Pro rifles all have in common a B5 Systems SOPMOD stock, a set of Williams WGS Tactical Folding Sights, a PWS 556 flash hider, a machined M-LOK aluminum free-float handguard of Smith & Wesson's own manufacture, and a Radian Raptor-LT ambidextrous charging handle.

The baseline Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV Pro semi-automatic rifle features a mid-length gas system, while the Volunteer XV Pro 14.5" comes instead with a Carbine-length gas system and a 14.5-inch length with a pinned flash hider, so that the overall barrel length meets the minimum 16" criteria under which it could only be sold as a Short Barrel Rifle in the United States, thus being subject to NFA provisions.

Last, but not least, the Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV Pro DMR variant features a rifle-length gas system and a 20" barrel for better accuracy at longer ranges.
