With the new years getting closer, and the 2018 SHOT Show with it, the world's most important gunmakers are rushing to announce their upcoming releases.

Among those is Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. – one of America's most notable and respected firearms manufacturers, and the producer of some of the most successful civilian-grade handguns and long guns launched in the past years; and Ruger has just announced the imminent launch of a new semi-automatic pistol, which will be showcased at the 2018 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, at the end of January.

We're talking about the Ruger Security-9.

The Ruger Security-9 is a mid-size pistol whose main intended use, as its own name suggests, is in the field of personal security, home and property protections by civilians, and as a service sidearm by private security professionals.

Despite the name being reminiscent of a great Ruger classic – specifically the Security Six revolver, first launched in 1972 and kept in production until 1988, scoring big on the international commercial markets and being issued to countless law enforcement in America and abroad – the Ruger Security-9 is best described as a beefed-up variant of the Ruger LCP II pocket pistol, first announced in October 2016 and first showcased to the public at the 2017 SHOT Show.

What the Ruger Security-9 and the tiny LCP II have in common goes beyond general aesthetics and a common chambering – the only caliber announced so far for the Security-9 being 9mm Luger.

The Ruger Security-9 indeed features a peculiar trigger system, dubbed the Secure Action, also found on the LCP II and combining the smooth trigger pull of the LCP with the short, crisp feel and positive reset of a single action.

Safety features include a bladed trigger safety and a manual safety; a neutrally balanced sear with significant engagement and strong spring tension; and a hammer catch to help prevent the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled.

Two steel alloy, double-stack magazines with a polymer baseplate and follower are issued with each Ruger Security-9 pistol; capacity is 15 rounds or 10-rounds, depending from local laws and regulations. 9x19mm is the only available chambering so far, but other options can't be ruled out for the future

The new Ruger Security-9 features a glass-reinforced black Nylon polymer frame incorporating a hard-anodized, precision-machined aluminum chassis with full-length slide rails.

The slide is machined out of blued, through-hardened alloy steel and features front and rear slide serrations as well as a set of dovetailed high-visibility sights: the front sight is fixed, while the rear sight is adjustable for drift.

Sights can be easily changed out for different color options, available separately.

The 10,1 cm (4") barrel of the new Ruger Security-9 pistol is likewise manufactured out high-resistance alloy steel and features six right-handed grooves with a 1-in-10" rifling pitch.

The polymer frame hosts all controls – located only on the left side, so no ambidextrous capabilities on this one! – and offers a MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail for tactical accessories as well as a well-textured grip for slip-proof handling even in the hardest conditions.

The internal, Secure Action hammer system provides strong ignition force, yet allows for easier slide racking when compared with many striker-fired pistols. Being essentially a double-action only system, the Ruger Security-9 does not require the trigger to be pulled before disassembly.

18,3 cm (7.24") long overall and 2,59 cm (1.02") wide, 12,7 cm (5") high and weighing in at barely 671 grams (23.7 oz.) when empty, the Ruger Security-9 is by all means well apt for everyday, day-long concealed or open carry, for either personal protection or duty, and has another important feature going for it: the manufacturer's suggested retail price, being set at $379.00 in the United States.

While there is no word yet regarding commercial availability on export markets and thus on price figures outside north America, the low MSRP is definitely an important market advantage for the Ruger Security-9. The guarantee of life-long reliability of Ruger products, along with a very simple layout and a price tag that everybody can afford is likely to make the Security-9 one of the top-selling guns of 2018.
