Shooters and hunters who use both modern and antique replica muzzleloaders have always had an issue with propellants: typical powder is not very practical for many uses, and is susceptible to moisture and other elements, making it less than ideal for hunting.

The Hodgdon Powder Company solved that problem long ago with the launch of pre-formed, or pelletized, muzzleloading propellant which is much more resistant to elements and easier to load.

New for 2018, the company expanded its line at the NSSF SHOT Show in Las Vegas with the Triple Seven FireStar line of pelletized muzzleloading propellant.

Other than just giving the propellant pellets a distinctive star shape, the addition of longitudinal grooves increases the surface area and allows the propellant itself to burn cleaner and develop higher velocity levels: the company claims the new pellets offer up to 50 feet-per second (15,24 mps) more from a 100-grain load.

The Hodgdon Triple Seven FireStar offers easier loading, eliminate spillage, and ignite faster than standard powder; it also does not generate sulphur smell. It will be available starting February in 60-pieces clamshell packages. Each pellet equals to approximately 33 grains of powder.
